Crabcake
We have a lot of stray cats in the neighborhood, and because we're trying to help the situation, I thought it would be a good idea to volunteer at the Trenton Animal Shelter a few hours a month. I'm not sure what I was thinking: I'm weak. The second time I went in (early August 2005), this timid little kitten was going to be put to sleep, and I just couldn't allow that. So I took her, thinking that I could bring her by PetSmart to have her adopted. I called her Crabcake because I was told she was very shy and stand-offish.

However, by the second day she was home with us, she had developed a nasty eye infection. Glen did some research and determined that it was some form of herpes. And reading some cat-herpes-horror stories online, I was convinced that she'd have a chronic problem her entire life, and I'd never get her adopted.

But like I said, I'm weak. I really don't like that about myself at all. Despite all of the sickening goo oozing out of and gumming up her eyes and nose, we fell for Crabcake, hard. Despite her sensitive eyes (which, who knows, may have been the reason she was so timid) and initial caution, she really warmed up to us, too. She really loves Angus, Platooski and Simon. Monkey and Lacey are wonderful, but they don't really like Crabcake much; they've had enough of the new additions to the household (understandably). And because they're generally cranky to little Crabcake, she doesn't like them at all. Hopefully the girls work out their differences!

Yesterday (8/6/05) was the first day I saw Crabcake open her eyes all the way on her own, and I saw big clear eyes! Not totally clear, but certainly better.

Since we've only had Crabcake for a short time, we don't have many pictures of her yet. Here's what we have, so far. It's so nice to see her eyes!
